A scheme is a locally ringed space which can be equipped with an open cover such that the restricted sheaf to each member of the cover, is an affine scheme.

The sheaf of rings is termed the structure sheaf of the scheme.

Such an open cover is a coordinate atlas and each individual open set, along with its identification as the spectrum of a ring, is a coordinate chart.
